Shelly May Helmick

Shelly May Helmick-Murray, 51, of Topeka passed away unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep on January 11, 2020.

She was born in Topeka, Kansas, the eldest child of Ronald and Eugena Helmick on June 27, 1968. Shelly was a dedicated mother, spouse, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who selflessly poured her whole life into fulfilling these roles with an endless joy and love. She always put others before herself, treated everyone she met with kindness, and would do anything she could to provide support for and show her love to friends and family.

Despite the challenges she experienced throughout her life, Shelly never gave up and always saw the good in people, the positive in all situations, and had a great appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. Her creativity and joy manifested itself in her love of crafts, gardening, bee keeping, and cooking. Her family fondly remembers her selfless love in caring for and unconditionally supporting them.

Shelly spent most of the last two decades working for the Seaman school district’s food services before recently moving to a new position with the district’s grounds and facilities. Earlier in her life, she worked in various service industry roles around Topeka. Many of her co-workers and individuals who interacted with her remember her fondly, her kindness being her most dominant trait.

Shelly is survived by her husband, Randy Murray; her three sons, Joseph Randol, Dustin Randol (Jessica Hernandez), and Andrew Murray and step-daughter Amanda Murray-Spingarn; her grandson, Lukas Randol; her mother, Eugena Helmick; her sister, Donna Helmick; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family members. She is preceded in death by her father, Ronald Helmick.
