Jesse Poe

Jesse Poe, 89, beloved father, Grandad and friend, went to be with the Lord Saturday, February 9, 2019.   Service to be held Tuesday, February 19,2019 at 6pm at The Church of Latter Day Saints at 2401 SW Kingsrow Road, Topeka, Kansas  66614.

Jesse is preceded in death by his parents, John and Aureba Poe, and his four brothers, Bruce, Brooks, John and Dale Poe.

He is survived by five daughters, Roxanna (Ron) Phillips, Tammy (Andy) Andreoli, Sanda (Jerry) Rankin, Kelly Poe, and April Cunningham; as well as two step children, Reno McCreery and Dawna McCreery.  He is the beloved Grandad to 15 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.

Jesse was born on November 30, 1929, the middle child of five brothers in Tucumcari, New Mexico.  He was raised on a ranch there with his family until they moved to San Diego, California.  He was married twice (Greeta Ann Fortner , Patricia La Raine Poe).   He worked as a salesman for many years and then as the Executive Vice President of Dale Poe Development Corporation where he enjoyed building development with his brothers.

He celebrated 55 years Sober in Alcoholics Anonymous this past December and spent a lifetime committed to helping other alcoholics get and stay sober.  He was a man who never judged people but tried to encourage them to overcome their difficulties and live their best lives.   He had an honest and very genuine belief in the power of God to restore us when we let go, ask for help, and give back by helping others.

Jesse was a beloved Daddy and Dad, Grandad and Great Grandad, Uncle Jess, Mentor, Sponsor and friend.  He never met a stranger and always had time to listen and share his experience.

He loved the forest and his family and babies especially!  He loved to get in the car and just drive.  He was a dapper dan who loved clothes and to dress up and go out on the town.  He was a very generous man with a checkered past that was more than balanced out by his years of loving service.

He always said, “just talk to the man upstairs”.

He will be missed but we rejoice that he is in heaven with our savior.

  3. Jesse reached out to me when it seemed like everyone else had thrown me away. He encouraged me to be present, to accept reality first and then work to change it if reality wasn’t good. He never judged me. I absolutely love Jesse Poe. He was one of the greatest men I have ever known in my 63 years. We need more just like him.

  4. My dear friend Jessie,
I came from a very, very checkered past and it was in fact, your words “Just talk to the man upstairs”, that encouraged me to stay the fight. Your wisdom will be terribly missed.

  5. You’ve left your footprint on our hearts. Thank you for gracing us all with your presence here on earth, see you at the big meeting above, rest in peace my friend.

  6. It was a honor to of met you, I’m sorry for the circumstances but glad that you were able to make it to your family and I was able to make it back home myself. Great achievements you have made in life, and you were proud of that 55 year coin. It’s not the materialistic things that we have in life that matters but the memories that we leave behind for our loved one’s and friends that counts. Untill my time comes that I get to see you again may you watch over us as all as our guardian angel.
