Bailey Kassens passed away peacefully in her sleep at Emporia Place in Emporia,
Kansas on February 25, 2019. She was 98 years old.
Helen was born on a farm north of Emporia September 8, 1920. She was the youngest daughter of Clyde and Edna Smith Brown. She graduated from Emporia High School.
Helen married the first love of her life, Laurence P. Bailey, in 1937. They were married for over 40 years before his death in 1983. They lived in Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota before returning to Emporia where she continued her 40 year career as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell, retiring in 1980 when the local SWB switchboard closed.
Several years after Laurence’s death, she was contacted by a former EHS classmate and love blossomed. Helen married Theron G. Kassens in 1992. Their happiness was cut short due to Theron’s death from cancer in 1995.
Helen was a member of P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter GT, First Christian Church, Beauceant, several study clubs and bridge clubs.
She was preceded
in death by her parents, two sisters, Nadine Brown Hopper of Emporia, and Betty
Brown Moore of Linn. All three Brown
sisters lived to be more than 96 years of age.
As a result of their early years growing up on a farm with hard-working
parents and their involvement in 4-H, a life-long love of gardening and a
strong work ethic were shared by all.
Survivors include: a nephew Charles Robert Hopper, Jr. of San Diego, and five nieces: Patricia Hopper Dahnke, Waller, TX; Karen Hopper Carns, Kansas City, MO; Nancy Hopper LeClear, Emporia; Janet Moore Elliott, Morrowville, Carol Moore Ramey of Manhattan, and numerous great and great great nieces and nephews. Also surviving are Theron’s children Pam Kassens Knight and Todd Kassens, both of Austin, TX. and their families.
Cremation has occurred. Memorial contributions may be made to the Emporia Friends of the Zoo, PO Box 345, Emporia, 66801. There will be a celebration of life at a later date.
